Batman is a hero which has closest similarity with the reality, even we also need to distinguish which reality is this, let's say its a common reality. He has the most 'human-natured' ability, personality, even though his appearance is a little bit fancy, but he still a human alright. he can bleed so he need a Kevlar body suit, he can hurt when fall from unimaginable high places so he need a parachute-like coat, and the best part is he can make a mistake. which every human are certainly does.
instead of being 'the chosen one' as other superheroes, Batman rather been prodigy of a dark side of our civilization, in the worst possibility that we can imagine. he was formed by sinister phenomena of our everyday life. in this case in spite of describing him as a 'hero' i would use a term 'bad guy's bad guy'.
the reason i write this is that actually i was amazed by an icon which created in the latest batman movie. how he arises from our reality, connect it with his reality and peel philosophical aspect of good and evil in our belief. we use to think a character which hijacked an old lady's car is the bad guy and the one whom helped her is the good guy. but i found Batman and Joker character complete each other so well so that Joker become the old lady, Batman is the hijacker and our prejudice is the good guy.
why i can say as such let's start with Joker, since i mentioned him first.
in spite of defining him as a bad guy, i would rather describe him as a victim of a situation where it require him to be as he is. he put himself as a messiah of a chaos, which need to be there to bring a balance on the situation where good almost win. because when good side has it's prevalent, a justice will be redefined, and civilization will lose its balance. because the justice will be fallen to the hand of those who has most importance and power in the society. those kind of justice, or i can say righteousness, first will be the voice of majority, in a process, the majority will be broken down to smaller number where in the end, those who has most power of order will determine and define what is righteousness, meanwhile other majority will sees it as an evil tyranny. i will take an example of freedom vs communism. for once, most of people in the world, especially the 3rd world country sees communism as the 'bad guy' meanwhile freedom or democracy as a 'good guy' lets say in Indonesia or Malaysia or Philippines, we want to express ourselves to create something, so we foreseen the democracy is the best way to facilitate our importance. once communism has been crumbled down, now we started to foreseen that democracy has been a 'bad guy' because it was forced to nation which was unable to receive it due to the culture, as let's say Iraq, Iran, Lebanon, Palestine, Afghanistan those vision of righteousness, was started once again to the whole world. so righteousness is not something fixed. it always move itself to equilibrium with the variables of good and evil crossed. and joker in this movie is the character that wanted to make sure the equilibrium doesn't stood in excess demand or supply on each side, so there will be no recession. just like the law of economics.
so in the opposite way, Batman, someone which trying to push the line of good, further, so the evil line will reach zero or near zero. yes he is also a product of a statistical figure of society. he needed to be there to restrain the traditional righteousness of the people. he is the trust icon of the society.
what attractive about this character is that he had a some kind of hero's code of conduct. not to use excessive force or even firearms in disabling the villain. this may be the product of 50's comic making rules but it expanding itself into a philosophical statement. that hero should be defending people and or in the other way, not to crush villain. then something crossed my mind the foreign policy of US which use offensive approach in defend purpose, actually made them not to look like a hero??? what do they expect when applying this policy, when they realize that the whole world righteousness will stood against them??
well to wrap it up lets give our prejudices for good and evil in this case. once we set up our mind, it will violate the whole philosophical relativeness, because we put in something biased in it. it kills the whole frame. so we become the bad guy in the old whom hijacked the old lady's car.
